Email Viruses In the past few
years there has been a spate of viruses circulating in emails that
look like they have been sent from Internet Service Providers.
It is becoming increasingly common for viruses
to ‘spoof’ the email address used by email viruses in
order to increase the likelihood that email virus filters will be
bypassed and users will open such emails i.e. a potential email
could be faked to look like it was sent from a trusted source.
Legitimate correspondence from Compass Communications
will never contain an attachment without an explanation of what
the attachment is. For example, we will never send an attachment
and simply say ‘We have attached important information regarding
your account.’
When we email you, we will always use the following
format:
1) A greeting – ‘Dear Compass customer’, ‘Dear
Mr Bloggs’ etc
2) A message body explaining in detail why we are contacting you
3) A signature – ‘Kind regards from the team at Compass
or signed off by a member of the customer care team etc
If you receive an email from Compass with an attachment
that does not follow the format above, delete it immediately. It
was not sent from us and may contain a virus. If you are unsure
about any email you have received that appears to come from Compass,
please feel free to contact us to verify that it is legitimate.
Compass’ virus filters are updated regularly
and we have implemented a “Genotype™” virus scanning
solution. This provides you with protection from unidentified fast-moving
viruses even before they are registered as viruses.
However, to ensure your computer remains virus-free,
it is recommended that you do not open any file attachment unless
you know what it is, even if it appears to come from a friend. Viruses
can replicate themselves and spread through email. Do not open any
files attached to an email if the subject line is questionable or
unexpected.
Keep your computer’s anti-virus software
updated and scan your computer for viruses on a regular basis. You
will find more information on virus threats, hoaxes and virus protection
on the web sites of reputable anti-virus software providers such
McAfee
or Sophos.
